Him like me, both have 7-figure operations with lots of employees. We talked about what it took to get here, the trials, the tribulations, the blood, sweat, and tears and how it is all worth it. These Business Builder articles are not written by an ivory tower, armchair theorist from a university who never made a dime in the real world. It was not written by some idealistic descendant of rich parents who never had to earn a buck in his life. It was not written by an ‘expert’ from a large corporation who has all the time and money (not his own) in the world at his disposal and will show you how to make a meager percentage of profit if you invest a million dollars, go through tons of unnecessary detail, and then wait five years.

No, these articles were written by a person who actually did become successful in a short period of time with limited funds and no outside help. Most ‘make a lot of money’ stories are mere spinoffs or, someone was in the right place at the right time. Or, their family already had a great deal of money and connections to begin with. No, I’m a regular guy just like you. We have just fell into the right industry that has sheer potential. Now, it is just up to both of us to do something with it, right?

I’m sure you would agree, given enough time and money, anyone can make money. To make a lot of money in a short period of time in a simple service business like window cleaning with less than a $100 (like me), now, there’s a trick worthy of some eyebrow raising attention. Add to this that you can start this venture or re-ignite your passion to start again in your business with whatever experience you may or may not have. It’s ok. Maybe you have limited marketing or managing know-how, maybe you struggle with hiring, or skill sets, or equipment and supplies.

These articles are geared to us, the working man or woman who was in the same position I was: looking for a better way. Most people live paycheck to paycheck with no savings or assets, working an 8 hour per day job for a big company, no experience, no rich relatives – nothing. What we do is tried, tested, and proven in real life. It has passed the ‘fluke’ test. In many successful ventures, the person who ‘made it’ did it by accident and really never knew why it happened. But, these one-book authors think they do know why it happened and write a book. Then the readers of the book try the system, and it fails.

Not here, what we do as entrepreneurs has worked very successfully - by me twice, by other writers of the magazine, it’s worked for my dad (I taught him), and 2 out of state friends. Here are the high points to a window cleaning business:

  1. This business requires a minimum of time and money to start. But you will be so excited, that you will eat, sleep, and think window cleaning.
  2. You don’t need any special experience or skills to do this. You can easily learn everything you need to know to be a professional at this business.
  3. You don’t need to buy or rent buildings unless you want to. I started out from my home and eventually after reaching just under a million dollar’s annual revenue decided to relocate my office out of the home and found a commercial office space to run my operation out of.
  4. This business will work anywhere. You can parachute me to any town or city in North America and I could easily do it all over again, but faster.
  5. Depending on how you structure your business, you can make quick part time consistent income in a matter of days or create a six-figure income inside of eighteen months.
  6. If your vision dictates, you can create a window cleaning business empire that takes you to what I call Stage 4 or Auto-Pilot and come and go as you please. That might be hard for you to believe, but believe it. It is happening with select window cleaning business owners all over the country.
Now, here are a few things you should know to get your business going or get it to the next level:

1. Business Name: Here are some suggestions on how to come up with a winning name for your business:

  • Don’t rush the process.
  • Think about your audience.
  • Avoid hard-to-spell names.
  • Short is better than long.
  • Conduct a thorough Internet search.
  • Conduct a trademark search.
  • Get the .com domain name.
  • Get feedback on the name.

2. Branding, Re-branding: Your look is your brand. If you look like a slob it makes people think you do shoddy work and that is a reputation you do not want if you are to attempt to build a million-dollar operation. Are you in need of a re-branding? Is everything consistent in the look of your company across the board like colors, font, logo?

3. Markets to penetrate: What are your plans for this year? What radius will you cover – a smaller or larger area? Will you focus on storefronts, residential, large commercial, high-rise?

4. Services to offer: A smart company offers more than one service. You should to. It very easily adds revenue when you offer your customers other services besides window cleaning. Services such as house washing and gutter cleaning are complimentary and may double your revenues when offered. We just added year around holiday lighting and had a decent spike in revenue by just making the announcement to our customers.

5. Vision Statement: Do you have one? This is the DREAMING piece – if everything goes right, how will your organization change the world. Your vision statement should be an audacious dream of a future reality based on the work you do.

6. Mission Statement: Do you have one? This is the DOING piece – how you intend to act as a servant leader. The WHO, WHAT, and HOW of Mission. A well-crafted mission statement answers WHAT you do, WHO benefits from this and HOW you do it.

Now, if entering this business for the first time, do not attempt it if you do not possess common sense or if your emotions override your common sense. Do not attempt this if you are not the type of person who can adhere to the critical rules of being persistent and initiating a project and following it through to completion. It will end in disaster.

Be aware that you will have to change and fix your thinking about many fallacies that were hammered into your head all your life. And this is especially important for the seasoned window cleaner that’s ready to make a giant leap forward in revenue.

If you do possess the tools to carry this business through, you will enter a new world and a new existence. Your personality, outlook on life, confidence, stature with family and friends, and even your body chemistry will change for the better. You will begin to enjoy life as it was meant to be enjoyed. For the first time in your life, you will have clear objectives and goals that make sense.

You entered this business to become financially independent. Before embarking on this journey, you probably tried the popular way that most people think is going to help them achieve financial independence – going to college and becoming an employee of an institution or corporation. By now, it is likely you have seen that there is a very low probability of becoming financially independent through that method.

So, at this point you know that your best chance to become financially independent is to start your own business - and in our case, we chose window cleaning. But in order to realize your objective, your business is going to have to be successful and make real profits in substantial volumes. But the probability of a new start-up business and becoming successful is also very low – if you go about it the wrong way. And if you’ve been in business for a while, you must keep your business alive and growing, never going backwards. Way too many Wrong Way, Inc.’s are started every year by entrepreneurs who don’t have the information they need for real business success.

Wrong Way in marketing

The entrepreneur will try to market it in all the wrong ways. The few who do succeed at marketing the service then find that other business killers await them, such as government regulations, the legal system, criminals, and bad cost management. The business then fails. The entrepreneur ends up bankrupt and personally devastated.

But it won’t be that way for you. Unlike the Wrong Way, Inc. entrepreneurs, you are going to start out or re-start with a master plan with goals and objectives and the best and most effective information for business success.
